Flying the nest

Active Oxfordshire, which is part of the Active Partnerships, formerly referred to as the County Sports Partnership Network or CSPN, made the decision to split from Oxfordshire County Council, to open up additional opportunities for funding.

To be more sustainable, more efficient and more flexible, many of these partnerships across the country are becoming independent entities with charitable status.

Helping to facilitate this process for Active Oxfordshire, Microtrading was responsible for creating a new secure and flexible IT platform that’s hosted in the cloud.

Andy Penlington, Director of Microtrading, said: “We specialise in the IT requirements of the sports industry, helping many members of the Active Partnerships and the Sports and Recreation Alliance.

“We’ve now helped a number of sports partnerships with the IT aspect of becoming independent from a larger entity. Some are based within county council premises and their servers, others are based within a local University.

“What they all require though, is a considered approach with attention to detail, ensuring compliance with the policies of external stakeholders.”

Into the cloud

We designed a cloud-integrated infrastructure aimed at increasing Active Oxfordshire’s productivity and introduce better collaboration capabilities. This involved setting up a new Microsoft Office 365 tenancy, with access to key cloud services such as file sharing and email.

Andy continued: “Cloud computing has been a revelation for many of our sport industry clients.

“Cloud computing -based products and services provide an ideal level of flexibility and reliability, enabling them to interact effectively with clubs and members, while also making it easier to manage and organise staff.”

Microtrading also specified, procured and installed new equipment for all staff, which included desktops as well as connectivity and telephony infrastructure. We instructed a trusted partner to carry out the setup of the connectivity and telephony elements to ensure a timely and high-quality installation that minimised potential downtime caused by the relocation.

A job well done

Ed Nicholas, Senior Strategic Relationship Manager said: “Being hosted within the Council’s servers had been very restrictive. We now have excellent operational flexibility, where before there was none.

“With our own IT infrastructure and under the guidance of Microtrading, we can embrace practices such as mobile working, and make adjustments to improve our service as we see fit.

“Microtrading’s first-class support has been exceptionally helpful, throughout the installation process and beyond.”
